Journey to 1000 Subscribers Update

tl;dr We Are Failing

Well, since this experiment started back in September, we have gained 18 subscribers. Growing from 329 to 347 subscribers. This is not where I thought we would be right now. It turns out without going viral and getting 1 video to have thousands of views, it's hard to get people to follow you. What are the next steps? How do we get to 1000? I am going to tell you.

We are going to break our one rule. We are going to advertise. We are going to pay money to someone or some company to promote our content. There are a few avenues we are going to explore.

  1. YouTube promotion
  2. Facebook promotion
  3. Fiverr promotion

I am going to create a video and pay the same amount on each platform, I am thinking $20 each, and see what drives the most results.

If this turns out to work to get me to 1000, I will have wasted quite some time in trying to grow the channel naturally. In my mind, there needs to be some critical mass of subscribers that gets reached, and then a channel takes off. It would be interesting data to understand how much money is spent by some of the top creators to promote their content. Also at what point did they start this promotion process? How many subscribers did they have?

These are all questions I hope to answer someday and I may do some real journalism to get these answers. Reaching out directly to some of the channels I admire (MKBHD, Babbish, B1M, etc).

I am going to report this back in due time with another article. In the meantime please comment if you have done any of this in the past. What has worked what hasn't? Also, be sure to read the previous entries in this series.
