Eat Your Cake and Own It Too
The biggest craze on the internet right now is undoubtedly non-fungible tokens, better known as NFTs. I won't bore you with the details of what they are as I am sure you already know since they have been everywhere recently. From Podcasts (NBA Topshot, Beeple) to Television you can find out what they are just about anywhere. What I am here to talk about is turning something once only enjoyed at birthday parties and weddings into a work of art that lasts forever. Yes, I am talking about Digital Cake, NFT yumyums, culinary art for the digital world.
My wife has been making cakes for over 10 years now. She started off working for a local bakery in college and has since started her own small business making cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, and anything cake related. She makes them for birthdays, weddings, funerals (yes a funeral cake), and even cakes specially made for dogs. She would love to do this as her full-time job but it's not feasible right now. She has a website, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube where she promotes her business. This is what a lot of small businesses do and especially bakers who want to promote their work. They set up all these accounts to drive business through the messages and traffic to web forms. Their goal is to hit it big and be the next Chelsweets who bakes full-time and rakes in the dough.
But the demand for specialty desserts/baked goods can only be so big since you are geographically limited as a small business. Basically, any order must be within driving distance usually within the same town. Making the market for your product pretty small. Thus limiting your revenue potential since a cake can only be sold 1 time to one buyer. In comes NFT.
While most of the joy of a cake comes from eating it, there is still value in its appearance. Especially when so much time is spent in the creation process, and in the years learning and perfecting the craft. This is where NFTs can come in to play. This allows the process of creating these cakes and the beauty of the finished product to also hold more value past the date it gets cut into.
I set out to create an NFT that takes the short videos that get posted to Instagram and highlights the effort and skill it takes to make these cakes. Trust me I have tried my hand at this and it never ends up looking how it does in my head. By packaging these up and marking each NFT with a difficulty rating and properties based on the design and flavors of the cake I hope to bring awareness and longevity to a once considered one-time work of art.

More will be posted every week as I work through her back catalog and as she makes new cake creations.
I would also love to help you take your culinary art online to the NFT world, just drop me a comment to connect.
